  • Perform structural analysis of Naval Surface Combatant hull structure, utilizing software and traditional hand calculation techniques involving application of commercial industry standards and requirements.
  • Apply engineering judgment, experience, technical skills, and applicable Codes, Standards and Regulations to complete structural analysis of both Ship’s and temporary steel structure in support of rigging arrangements, transportation configurations, and temporary support.
  • Provide engineering analysis in support of manufacturing methods and tools for ship construction. Primary efforts center on: lifting and handling of ship components weighing in excess of 50 tons and of varying complexity, temporary ship support, as well as jigs, fixtures, lifting devices and custom tools used in the ship construction process.
  • Specify lifting lug locations, temporary back up structure if required, rigging and transportation arrangements, welded connection details and non-destructive testing requirements.
  • Generate documentation to communicate lifting and handling information to the Trades
    Work with transportation equipment: Self Propelled Modular Transporters, Shipyard Transporter, and TTS System to move structural components at various stages of completion, including final translation and launch.
  • Routinely interface with manufacturing personnel on the deck plates to provide guidance as necessary.
  • Participate in or lead technical interchanges on issues with customers such as U. S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding), or others as required.
  • Work with other engineers in a manufacturing environment with emphasis on safety and quality.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • BS in Civil Engineering required with concentration in Structures.

Required/Preferred Experience

Engineer I: No experience required. Entry level position
Engineer II: Minimum 1 year applicable experience
Engineer III: Minimum 3 years applicable experience

  • Practical experience and/or education in Structural engineering and Design required, with emphasis on welded connection design and associated NDT requirements
  • Knowledge of AISC and ASME B30 & BTH Codes and Standards 
  • Familiarity with different grades and types of steel, aluminum and wood materials
  • Demonstrated experience working in a time sensitive environment with multiple competing priorities
  • Strong leadership, self-confidence, and project management skills
  • Standard computer skills using MS  Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook required. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of structural analysis methods, both traditional hand calculation as well as FEA, especially with software tools RISA and Mathcad. FEMAP/Nastran or Hypermesh experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Autocad and CATIA (or equivalent 3D modeling software) required.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills required
  • Ability to present effective and concise oral and written communications to Trades and Management
  • Willingness to work in a shipyard/construction environment, on-board ship, pier side or at sea with potential of confined spaces, as well as an office environment
  • Requirement to be available for periodic 2nd shift and weekend support as necessary to support Manufacturing needs
