Under the supervision of the Health Information Services Supervisor, and guidance of the Health Information Services Lead Person or Transcription Coordinator, the Health Information Services Technician verifies receipt of, assembles and analyzes medical records of discharged patients. The HIS Technician further processes records by entering and updating physician documentation deficiencies, and assisting physicians presenting to the department for record completion. The HIS Technician is responsible for reviewing requests for and appropriately releasing confidential, legally protected, patient information. Other work includes preparation of birth and death certificates, with subsequent transmission of data to the State of Maine, the location and pulling of records for patient care, audits, quality review and risk review activities. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.
A High School Diploma or GED is required. Post-secondary education and training in medical secretarial or through an accredited health information technology program is preferred. This position requires six (6) months experience in a healthcare environment, preferably in records processing. Must have good interpersonal skills as the incumbent interacts with physicians, other departments, staff, and individuals outside the hospital. Must be able to operate independently in completing all tasks with minimal guidance from the Supervisor. Must be highly accountable for accuracy, quality, and timeliness of work. Incumbent's performance impacts the ability of the hospital to keep a current revenue stream. Additionally, incumbent has access to and is responsible for appropriate release of highly confidential , legally protected patient information.
